Large Department Disbanded: Embracing Change and Forging a Future Together –
1 1/2 Years Later and
2 1/2 Years Later
1 1/2 years later:
“…The result was a successful coming together of the department! What I as a manger noticed was that a willingness to help was developing – a willingness to work together. It stated our journey towards staff reduction in the most positive light that I could imagine.
We began helping others. We became more excited about the future possibilities than holding onto our old ways. We began to trust. We began to release resentments. While the blame did not cease altogether, it certainly was reduced. We did become that team, and we continued to be that team today – even now, when at the end of May 2002, I will only have 7 staff member left. …”
2 1/2 Years Later:
Pocket Wisdom for Organizations: Creating an Organization Culture Responsive to Change was used for a large department that was being disbanded. The object was to bring the employees together as a team to develop a better understanding of teamwork so as to be better prepared to locate and join another employment community as a more effective team player.
“…People who could not tolerate each other are now friends…
…Efforts are made, both in and away from work, to support current and former staff…the remaining team supports each other as well as supports the leader. …
…duties and responsibilities are shared…truly we have become more cohesive and effective. …”

Learning and Appling Structural vs. Emotional Authority
1 1/2 Years Later
“…As I went through the class, I personally found great value in learning to distinguish between structural and emotional authority. This helped me to depersonalize business situations and not blame my management for having to make hard decisions that could impact me.
…Learning to recognize the ways in which some people try to control others directly or passively helped me to interact more effectively with them and not to take difficult situations “personally”. I also learned to value myself more and curtail self-blame. An example is where one of my shoes was wearing unevenly: before taking the class, I would have attribute it to a problem with me, such as walking incorrectly. However, after taking the class I had a more healthy perspective and would categorized it as a defective shoe rather than a defective self. …”

Saving a Senior Executive: Irreplaceable Talent
“…Not only have you enabled us to save a very difficult to replace employee, but you have enabled him to admit that he had a problem and to commit to take corrective action. As you well know this is a very difficult result to obtain, especially when you’re dealing with a strong ego of successful executives and you think about the legal exposure of decisions that have to be made. …
…this 20 year plus employee would have had to been discharged and his value know how would have walked out the door with him. After the key contribution he made to our company during his successful career, the loss would have been damaging. …
…you also probably have helped a human being live a more fulfilling life. …”

Transforming Workplace Dynamics
“…No other presentation has ever elicited the incredible positive response that this workshop garnered. …
…designed to look at the destructive attitudes and behaviors that occur in the workplace and at home. …
…Here are some of the comments I received from both employees and managers:
- …We need to get the entire 40 hour process into solar, set a key manager
- …It was great. I think everyone who works at Solar should be exposed to this workshop.
- …These changes in business coupled with this technological approach provide the right information at the right time. When will the full workshops be scheduled?
…This unique process is sure to help our employees learn the cause and effect of feelings to emotions; emotions to perspectives; perspectives to attitudes; attitudes to behavior; and behavior to consequences. …”

Lasting Results: Taking Customer and Employee Loyalty to a New Level
5 Years Later
“I can’t count the times that our managers quoted you. They never forgot all the things you taught them. …
…Because we felt it was the right thing to do, we notified the employees “months” before the sale was consummated or completed. In most dealerships, this honesty would have caused a “mass exodus” of employees. The fear of change destroys their focus and devastates the profitability of the dealership.
In our dealership, our employees (we had 115) chose to stay and support us…all the way through the changeover. THE LAST MONTH IN BUSINESS AS ROSE TOYOTA, WE HAD THE BIGGEST PROFIT MONTH IN OUR HISTORY. …
… I feel that your seminar had a significant effect on our employees relating to each other their supervisors and our ownership. It starts with ownership. If they truly believe in developing a culture (honestly honesty and integrity is a must), it flows through the supervisors and through all of the employees. We believed it, instituted it and made it our culture. …”

“…teaching on AUTHORITY, RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY couldn’t be more critical to establishing communication with managers and the total employee base. Clear BOUNDARIES are another essential. …
…Our business has over 100 employees and our profit centers deal directly with the public. By instituting the information learned in serenity sees Followship-Leadership process, we are becoming a more healthy, efficient and profitable organization.
We’ve experienced the pitfalls of power over/ power under relationships. Our employees didn’t like the results and neither did management. Transforming Failure and Low Morale into Success
Foloowship-Leadership
“Your Follow-Leadership Workshop [Creating an Organization Culture Responsive to Change] produced immediate and profound results in the attitude and commitment of the CSA staff.
..Prior to your workshop, CSA was failing. …the company was drifting with low morale and work ethics traceable…
…Worse, we were tolerating childish work behavior that was demotivating the entire staff and ruining profitability.
By revisiting and rededicating ourselves to to the company “Vision” the employees work out methods to achieve the mission. The entire staff is caught up in a new wave of enthusiasm. … We have a team again and we all feel part of it. …”

Aligning Personal Vision, Mission, and Principles with the Organization’s Mission and Goals: Fulfillment and True Attainment
“…Many phases and stages in the workplace were discussed, such as: the mission statement, company goals, personal goals, security for the future, family succession, and interaction with each other as a team to meet the goals of the company for its to succeed.
The company mission and goals along with our code of ethics to ourselves and others whom we interact with daily, clients, vendors, and the general public, were openly discussed and agreed upon by all attending. …

“…Three weeks ago AwareComm introduced our company to the BC&E class [Belief, Control and Empowerment], which is the precursor to Organizational Culture. Initially, the response to potential corporate “team building” exercises was met with defensiveness and closed ears. When it was explained to us that the preconceptions of what the material contained were inaccurate and to allow the process to evolve, the skepticism remained but there was a willingness to see what it was all about. Needless to say, as the introduction to BC&E comes to a close, in week one, those within the initial cadre became intrigued with the possibility of connecting personal growth to corporate health. As we listened and processed “beliefs” and “control” during these first three weeks, the attitude of those involved changed dramatically. Everyone is now eager to follow the process through to its completion and looks forward to what next week reveals about themselves as individuals and how these principles can be integrated into our company.
Having worked as a pilot for a major airline for the past 23 years; as a heavy jet captain, department chair for airmen standards and engineering director for special projects, I have seen how large companies operate and how they are inevitably get caught up in their own self-importance (i.e., fear), ultimately leading them to failure. I watched my airline die a slow agonizing death due to mini-kingdoms and power struggles that upper management blindly allowed foster inside their company walls, determined not do have that happen to the company I started with a dream, faith and hard work from those who have joined us. Knowing what is right and implementing it required a medium that created a baseline for all the employees that they would not only trust, but believe in. AwareComm® and Organizational Culture is that foundation.
As week one morphed through week three the comments of; “Why do this, we have a handle on it” and “I am not sure of the relevance of spending my time on touchy feely issues” have transformed to; “What a benefit this will be, not only to my personal growth and development, but also the company” and; “I hope you make everyone who works here do this course!” We did implement this program as a must for all employees.
Being in recovery myself, the ideas and concepts within the content of Org Culture are right in line with the work l have done. I wanted RMS to start off on the right foot as it relates to the personal foundation that I envisioned our employees desired in its leadership, from themselves and those they work with, and with AwareComm’s help, I have no doubt that we are positioning ourselves appropriately for the challenges that the future holds for us. …”

Employee Diversion Programs – FAA/HIMS and Alternative Sentencing

“…When Pierre Bigelow of Recovery Monitoring Solutions™ first presented the idea of blending a structured emotional sobriety aftercare program, AwareComm® Recovery PLUS™, with the proven and highly successful FAA, HIMS program, (a joint venture between the Airline Pilots Association and the FAA starting in 1977 created for treating chemically impaired flight crewmembers), the notion was very appealing.
Recovery Monitoring Solutions™ (RMS) partnering with AwareComm®, a Microsoft Gold Certified Software Developer, provides an 18 year proven and tested platform to insure professional software standards that has ease of scalability for enterprise demands and growth for the FAA.
The approach of Recovery PLUS™ would offer standardization of aftercare continued education to coincide with HIMS Aftercare Monitoring as well as facilitating a similar program for general aviation.
- The offline educational components combined with online interactive discussion groups would provide a blend of technology and methodology that uniquely supports the dynamics of the airline industry.
- The exclusive network would provide the trust factor that is so necessary to meet the high profile egos within the flight officers and encourage their willingness to share personal challenges.
- The progress reporting would interface smoothly with monitoring system and therefore increase effectiveness of professional review, using standards to ensure consistency of interpretation.
- The educational process would deliver content using a blend of professional standards and methodology of education and psychology, all from a recovery perspective.
All in all, it appeared to be the optimum program for total recovery utilizing their 12 steps as a foundation.
When Pierre suggested a pilot program bringing forth a mix of people new to recovery, people seasoned in recovery, people open to recovery and people resistant to recovery (both grounded and flying), I recognized this diverse mix would certainly be the optimum test of the idea for proof of concept.
Based upon the initial findings I was both amazed and pleased with the results in terms of the three critical measurements for all candidates:
- Concept Acceptance – acceptance of the emotional recovery principles.
- Content Understanding – the ability to associate different principles that apply to a particular event (the creation of a solution through the demonstration of association / cause and effect).
- Content Application and implementation – the expression of how the principles are being implemented within the candidate’s life (without specific prompting), and how well it is done within the fluidity of conversation).
Based upon the demonstrated results it is my intention to help expand your program to more fully incorporate Recovery PLUS™ [AwareComm’s® PWI Restorative Recovery™] into the HIMS program, as well as other areas in which we find the need for speed of emotional recovery.
We see this program as a critical factor in reestablishing pilots into services with both physical and emotional sobriety, resulting in not just rehabilitated individuals but far better pilots then when we started. …”

People from all walks of life have experienced a wide range of benefits from
The 5 Dimensions of Restorative Recovery.
These benefits have supported their individual values and needs as well as the collective needs of their families, businesses, and communities.
The following are few success samples specifically from the FAA Group of Pilots.
A Helicopter Pilot and Father Gains Emotional Maturity
“I am at a place in my journey to emotional sobriety that I never thought I would be at in my lifetime … I have the self-confidence and emotional maturity to make the decisions that are right for me and realize that I do have choices in my life.” Brian T.
Courage, Clarity, and Conviction
“One of the biggest changes I have encountered this month is an increase in my courage. That courage that I have gained has also kept the fear based thinking aside which is such a much needed thing.
I have been living the Four Absolutes each and every day and how simple it makes life! I have also learned to not keep things bottled up inside. By holding it in is where the fear based thinking starts to happen for me as well as I am not being honest with myself or others by not speaking my mind. By speaking my mind and having the courage to do so keeps my mind from going down the road of false illusions, creating outcomes before they even happen all based on anxiety, stress and fear.
I am so grateful for this eMod™ and what is still to come. I hope that I can lead my boys down the right path to adulthood and not make the same mistakes I did. Thank You Recovery PLUS [AwareComm’s® PWI Restorative Recovery™], each of you are amazing people.” Brain T
Greater Awareness, Better Decisions
[AwareComm’s® PWI Restorative Recovery™] has taught me how to grow up… as a result, I am able to see more choices, make better decisions taking in all aspects including cause and effect on the people around me.” Suzy H.
Lending a Hand
“[AwareComm’s® PWI Restorative Recovery™] …has given me the ability to reach out, lend a hand and steer my friend in the right direction of recovery sorry for that I am very grateful.” Suzy H.
Rediscover Myself and My Goals
“ [AwareComm’s® PWI Restorative Recovery™] …has helped me rediscover myself and my goals while letting go of childish hopes and dreams and looking towards the unknown and possibilities of tomorrow with a new (mature) perspective.
Following the process and with the incredible support I have received, I have turned both my professional and personal life around. I am rebuilding relationships as well as discovering new ones and am able to pursue real and fulfilling opportunities in life.” Stan D.
A Pilot Soars
“I want to express my appreciation for all of the time you have spent with me over the past several years. I have learned so much about myself and what I need to continue to do the rest of my life in keeping with my program and maintaining emotional sobriety.” Mike R.
Thanksgiving
“Absolutely very grateful to have a great relationship with my mother who could have gave up on me many moons ago but she has always been there through thick and thin and I am grateful for that. I am also very grateful to have you and Recovery Plus [AwareComm’s® PWI Restorative Recovery™]in my life thank you and god bless happy holiday to all at Recovery Plus. Regards, Mike R.”

AwareComm in Partnership with RMS created a 3-year pilot program providing Aftercare for Airline and General Aviation pilots. AwareComm provided Pocket Wisdom Insights™ Education Series (eMod™: PLT™ Delivery and DRMs™), Online Facilitated Principle-based Application Discussions, participant self-assessment, and Facilitator Reporting to both the M.D. (Dr. Bryman) and PhDs. This was extremely successful in escalating recovery and was praised by both the MD and the PhD who were responsible for reviewing and allowing the Pilots to regain their Medical and return to flying. The pilots themselves also praised the program for what it did for their life and for its blend of offline and online which filled a very specific need for many of them as they were in often remote areas that at that time did not have internet capabilities. The Aftercare continued even after they returned to the cockpit. The following is a brief explanation of the HIMS program.
What is HIMS? HIMS is an occupational substance abuse treatment program, specific to pilots, that coordinates the identification, treatment, and return to work process for affected aviators. It is an industry-wide effort in which managers, pilots, healthcare professionals, and the FAA work together to preserve careers and enhance air safety.
Overview: Alcoholism and other chemical dependencies are now recognized as part of a disease process. This disease affects commercial pilots to the same degree that it affects the general population. The HIMS program was established to provide a system whereby afflicted individuals are treated and successfully returned to the cockpit under the FAA Special Issuance Regulations (14 CFR 67.401).
The program is a cooperative one that includes the involvement of company representatives, pilot peer volunteers, healthcare professionals, and FAA medical specialists. While the program borrows heavily from treatment principles developed in both clinical and industrial settings, it has specific elements that reflect the unique nature of the safety-sensitive airline transportation system. Successful HIMS-model programs exist in the U.S., Canada, and other countries around the world.
Continuing Care: High quality continuing care is the key to establishing long-term sobriety.
High quality continuing care, also known as aftercare and monitoring, is the key to establishing long-term sobriety for the newly recovering pilot. Aftercare and monitoring consists of several elements, some mandated by the FAA and some not. The FAA Office of Aviation Medicine uses the term aftercare to mean the specific structured outpatient treatment that occurs after the initial intensive, most often inpatient or residential, phase. This structured outpatient treatment usually includes periodic meetings with a psychiatrist and weekly group therapy sessions.
In a more general sense, aftercare and monitoring can refer not only to structured outpatient treatment, but also to meetings with peer monitors, meetings with company supervisors and employee assistance personnel, meetings in mutual help 12 Step recovery groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), contact with AA sponsors, relapse prevention visits to the pilot’s treatment facility, and compliance testing. Most airlines with highly effective HIMS programs view aftercare for their pilots from this broader perspective and provide for pilot involvement in most, if not all, of these areas.

During my ten years in the field of alternative sentencing, I have seen many programs come and go. I have watched several clients referred to what is now called the Serenity Seas Recovery program [AwareComm’s® PWI™ Restorative Recovery™].
I have consistently observed that this program provides a foundation that enables people to effectively utilize the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
I fully and wholly endorse this program as part of alternative sentencing and long term recovery.

The Power of Culture: “…Much greater confidence – not being that I never had confidence in everybody here, but it tends to waiver sometimes. You’re really confident and sometimes you’re not. Confidence level is returning.”

“penetrates the psychological defenses and overcomes denial” – in a non-confrontation manner
“I am writing this letter in order to summarize my findings and conclusions from the consultative work I have completed at Awareness Communication Technology. During the six months while I have performed these services, I have had the opportunity to clinically validate Stop and Start Products [Personal Learning Technology, eMod Apps, and Pocket Wisdom Insights Series], in both the organizational and clinical formats.
I have also had the experience of using the products, personally. It is my clinical opinion that use of Stop and Start Products [Pocket Wisdom Insights Series] provide a level of education and therapeutic awareness which is roughly equivalent to approximately eight sessions of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy per module. … This clinical evidence seems to hold true across a wide range of clinical diagnosis, independent of the delivery environment or the socioeconomic status of the recipient. …penetrates the psychological defenses and overcomes denial in a unique and novel way.

While we had undertaken a multidisciplinary approach with him in the past, it was your work that must be credited with having the most profound affect on his recovery. It is an understatement to say we were astounded and pleased when Ian went 7 months before having another episode.”
Interestingly, the seizure he experienced in December was a wake-up call for us as we had slacked off on his program. It was a call to arms that got us back on the right track. However, I did not fully appreciate how significant a role Parallel Learning [PLT delivery and Pocket Wisdom Insights Series] played in Ian’s recovery until this past week. …”

“…I recently had the opportunity to complete the personal awareness process with a group of men who are participating in the rehabilitation program offered at Casa Rafael in Vista, CA. Not only was I impressed with the process as it applied to me personally, but I also witnessed an incredible team building effect that resulted from completing the first two steps, called Discovery, of the Process.
These were men who ranged from mildly interested to highly skeptical about participating in the process. After two days, I saw this peer facilitated approach format team of people committed to breaking the denial patterns they came in with and establishing a bonded team focused on implementing a solution.
The balance of the program, called Journey, focused on their personal issues as it unfolded. It resulted in building an interdependent group of people who saw a real possibility for re-educating themselves and re-engineering their lives as productive citizens in the workplace and in society.
I highly recommend this exciting breakthrough in technology that can powerfully and effectively change people’s lives, no matter what their background or education has been. …”

From Failure to National Victory and Lifelong Changes
“…History – Club Season
In April of this year, I was working with a number of young female athletes associated with the Coast Volleyball Club (CVC). This work involved what is referred to as “jump training”, working to improve the vertical jump and foot quickness of the individual athletes. On one weekend I took the occasion to observe the girls playing in a local tournament, I noticed that the girls had great individual talent, both in volleyball skills and athletic skills. However, the team appeared to be missing something. During the next month I questioned the girls, their coaches and their parents. The results confirmed my original thoughts, this was not a team yet but a group of athletes.
During that next month, I made arrangements for you to present a one day, 9 hour workshop to the team and their coach. The results were immediate. The team which had consistently placed 3rd or 4th in the Southern California Region, traveled to Chicago, Ill. to participate in the largest Midwest Regional Tournament of the year. They placed first and returned with stories of how they played at levels never before obtained as a team or as individuals.
At the end of June and the beginning of July the team participated in 2nd largest national volleyball tournaments, Davis and Junior Olympics. The team placed third in both tournaments (this was out of over 150 teams and 100 teams respectfully). They were the highest ranking team to participate in both tournaments. The tournaments were played back to back over a 10 day period, in two different cities. …
…During the evening and after the games I was able to talk to almost all of the girls about what had happened that night and about the conditions on each of the teams. All of the girls agreed that the losing teams played as a group of individuals, while the winners played as an inspired team. Additionally, each of the girls were able to recognize this in their individual teams. They all expressed their understanding of the need for playing as a team, and even knew how they could assist in bringing the team together. Interestingly, they all acknowledged that they learned these skills and had experienced feelings of success as a product of the workshop in spring. …
…Conclusion:
Based on past six month’s experiences, interviews and observations, there has clearly been a positive, long-term effect from the exposure of the girls of this club team to the Personal Awareness program. The program had not only an immediate impact on the behavior of the girls, but also affected their performance weeks and even months later. I submit that these will, in fact, will be life long changes that have occurred in these young women.
Finally, the only weakness in the program was our (yours and mine) not recognizing the extent of involvement that the coach plays in the success of the implementation of the program. The coach (or leader) must be trained first and be part of the training of the players. Additionally, leadership follow-up is extremely critical to the maximization of positive behavior changes that the young people retain. …”

“…Over the past 10 plus years since we first met, your determination to help the youth (and so-called adults) has been incredible. …As you will recall we have worked with athletic teams, individual high level athletes and plain old average everyday kids and in every case you have shown them how to maximize their ability and gifts by overcoming our individual life hurdles.
Additionally, for a guy who’s so smart, how come you always find the “hard cases”? Your program has turned around a significant number of kids who the system quote gave up on. Your patience and understanding are only surpassed by “Yoda” (and as I have said many times, I really believe you’re Yoda, no matter what Spielberg says). …”

xxxParticipating in the Application to Youth – Discovered Something Special… technology-based educational process – perfecting the technology
“…During the past years, I have worked closely with ‘Yoda’ to tailor this process for children and youth. I approached a girl’s club volley-ball team to see if our efforts could be of assistance to them. After meeting with their coach and parents, a workshop [AwareComm’s® Pocket Wisdom Insights] we scheduled for the first week in June. Upon completion of the 9-hour class, the coach was overwhelmed by the changes in her team. The team then traveled to the Midwest and participated in a national qualifying tournament, placing first. All of the member of the team, their parents and the coaching staff returned and shared the positive impact of the workshop had on their efforts—on and off the court.
Immediately following this turn around with the girl’s team, I watched my son play on a men’s team at the Junior Olympics. The difference between the two teams was so obvious—it was spooky. My son’s team worked just as hard but lacked that ‘something’ that separates TOP teams and players from good teams and players.
I knew that I had discovered something special. I had found a way to prevent young people from suffering from low self-esteem, negative peer pressure, and losing their life to addiction or self-inflicted mental or physical abuse.
The years ‘Yoda’ had spent perfecting the educational process [eMods™: PLT™ Delivery and DRMs™], testing it with many different life issues, and now my personal successes converged and have resulted in my becoming a faculty member at Life Skills U [AwareComm®].
You see, this man I call ‘Yoda’ is the founder and chief executive officer of Life Skills U [AwareComm®]. His name is Richard Jorgensen.
My mission at Life Skills U [AwareComm®] is to offer families the educational tools that bring together, into one learning process, all the ingredients for emotional maturity. Utilizing sports, I want to teach our youth how to integrate self-authority, self-responsibility, self-accountability, and self-control into their lives and how to create teamwork in their all their relationships—at home, work, worship, and play. …”

Seminar Changes Lives, May Help Community
Everybody in Denison is talking about the changes they see in long time newspaper publisher, Dick Knowles. He says an experience he had recently changed his life and that if other people in Crawford County area could experience the same thing, the possibilities are endless.
“I’ve learned to allow great things to happen instead of trying to control the world around me,” says Dick Knowles. “I can make decisions instead of judging. I’ve learned to let go and have faith.”
Why the change in attitude? Knowles had an “emotional road map” installed in his being. A design that let him “allow” things to happen, rather than “control” them.
He received the single ‘road map’ from San Diego, California. A man named Richard Jorgensen presented a 30-hour course that Knowles took called “Personal Awareness and Self-Esteem.” [AwareComm’s® Pocket Wisdom Insights] Knowles was so impressed by this course and what it did for him that he flew Jorgensen … to Denison (at his own expense) to present the course to the community members here. Nineteen area residents took the 30-hour course and approximately 27 more took the four-hour mini-course. The seminar was held on the weekend of January 14. Now, only two weeks gone by, obvious changes are occurring in the participants.
Several of these people, over the next few weeks will be interviewed and their emotional progress tracked for a series of articles dealing with how this information helped these individuals and how it can help the community as a whole. …
…Carolyn Bryant of “Little Bit of Heaven” in Dennison took the Personal Awareness course as well as Dick Knowles did. She feels that other community members and business people could get involved in the course when it comes around in February.
“I hope my personal appearance and conduct now, compared with before I took the course, will let them know that I have a different look on life.” Says Bryant. “I don’t feel that fear that I always used to feel either.”
Bryant says, that low self esteem and incidents from the past have always haunted her, but now they don’t.
“This course has helped me to understand my personal needs in times of crisis,” says Bryant. “For example, the loss of a family member, a health condition, a financial crisis, divorce or loss of a job. It is really helping me deal with my husband’s stroke and how I felt about that.”
Support groups are currently being set up for members of the first 30-hour course because the people that take the course need to keep learning long after the sessions is over and the last workbook is completed.
For area residents that are interested in changing their lives and changing the future of their community, Richard Jorgensen will offer a second chance to anyone who was unable to attend the first series of courses that were held just two weeks ago.
…“If anyone is skeptical about this course or are just too lazy to spend the time, those are bad reasons to miss this incredible experience” says Bryant. “It changes your life.”

Unearthing Self: A Life-Changing Realization
“What a wonderful discovery I made today, which to me seems like a treasure that had been waiting for me all along waiting to be unearthed, dusted off and brought out to shine, enrich, change.
To realize that we have this gift within us and could so easily miss out on owning it and using it for my own benefit and that of others.
You see, all my life since I am aware of it, I felt that there is nothing I had to offer to anyone. …
…Today I have realized that whatever I have gone through good and bad has helped shape the person that I am and that I didn’t know I was. I was seeing only the negative side, the hurting side, that wanted to keep me small, helpless and useless, while all the time all the chiseling was helping bring out the jewel inside to shine and reflect the light that was received.
I am very grateful to God for this wonderful realization and to Life Skills U [AwareComm’s Pocket Wisdom Insights Series] for showing me and helping me in this life-changing experience.”

My name is Jim Schmedding, a San Diego native, former San Diego Charger, and College All American. I have raised four of my own children. Each has his or her individual strengths and weaknesses; providing me with very unique experiences and bringing me to new levels of learning how to be a father.
Beyond my immediate family. I have worked with young people (ages 6 to 18) for the last 25 years as a friend, a coach, a volunteer, a businessman, an athlete and a concerned community member. I have seen all kinds of kids—good, bad, short, tall, fat, skinny, loud, quiet, strong, weak, long-haired, skinhead, violent, loving, ADD, comatose, gay, straight, clumsy, athletic, and every combination thereof. I have seen these kids at their highest level of achievement and their lowest level of hopelessness.
On my journey, I discovered something—so unique and yet so simple—that some may scoff while others will see its brilliance. I stumbled upon an educational process that, if completed and utilized, will insure success for your child no matter how you define success.
Discovery A New Technology and Its Success
Let me tell you how I know this too be true! Six years ago a friend introduced me to a man who was helping severely addicted, (normally drugs and alcohol), dysfunctional, and non-productive individuals. It became obvious to me that this man was doing something that left a profound impression on people. He explained that he had developed a new technology that accelerated learning –even if the person was resistant to the process—and allowed students to learn HOW to develop a new perspective on their lives.
After observing 3 men go from being sick, dirty, and hurting people who looked like they had been run over by an “18 wheeler”; to cheerful, alert, and dressed in three-piece business suits within one week, this man’s learning process got my attention.
I asked this man, who I now affectionately refer to as ‘Yoda’, to explain his concepts and plans for this accelerated change process. He was very interested in perfecting his technology and continuing in his quest to help addicted man and women break the chains of their bondage.
My Own Daughter’s Crisis
Then one of my children had a crisis, which manifested itself in the form of an eating disorder. As a top athlete at a major university and a former youth national team player, she was diagnosed with bulimia. After talking to a number of professionals and looking at all the recovering information available (none of which satisfied my inner self), I called ‘Yoda’.
After one weekend of intense education and a couple of weeks of ongoing coaching, my daughter called to inform me that she was ‘cured’. In retrospect, she was not completely cured but was vastly improved and not moving in a downward direction.
It became clear to ‘Yoda’—the author of this unique learning process—that it was time to properly document the result being achieved by this new technology.

“…For me, this letter is a way for me to move on from my past and the struggles I’ve endured. …
…For so long, I was drugged up on medications upon medications that I couldn’t really think for myself. I was on anti-depressants, mood stabilizers, anxiety pills, sleeping pills, etc. It was some of the strongest medications in the psychology world. I even became addicted to some of the stronger medications, which I still often times crave the high they gave me. Why would they even put me on drugs that I later learned are more addictive than some of the illegal drugs out there?
The psych world tried to label me with every mental problem known to man. For the longest time I went back and forth believing everything these doctors told me. I figured that if I believed them, it gave me a reason to accept the problems I was having. If I truly had this ‘so called mental problem’ than none of what I was going through was my fault.
But I was wrong.
I was even sent to the mental hospital more than few days because I could not stop myself from cutting. I had become a complete threat to myself. But all I wanted deep down, was some attention. I wanted someone to love me, and accept me for who I was. But I felt I was broken into so many pieces, that I never thought it would be possible.
After spending a few days at a retreat, I learned that what the doctors were doing was wrong. I didn’t need medication to be happy, and I didn’t have to punish myself anymore. All I had to realize was that God put me on this earth for a reason, and it was not to see me hurt myself over and over again. I WAS NOT, NOR WILL I EVER BE BROKEN!
If you asked me exactly what happened at that retreat, I couldn’t tell you. But I came out a new person.
No longer do I take medications, nor do I starve, purge, or do anything harmful to my body. I am happy with myself, and I like me for who I am. Now don’t depend upon others to make me happy, but I make myself happy.
As I now can think clearly, I can look back and see those who I’ve hurt, or used along the way in my destructive behavior. I now see that I hurt everyone around me, and I used my destructive behavior to get the attention I craved so much.
Why am I destructive behavior began, I really am not sure. It was a lot of things piled on top of each other. But the fact that I went through it, will not change. And if I could change it, I wouldn’t. I’ve become a happier, and stronger person because of it. And now I can help those around me, who I can see are going through what I’ve gone through. It has truly been a blessing to me. …”

“…as a minister in a middle sized family church, I recognize that personal and family problems are often left unresolved. These problems are held inside and fester until they come out as anger or divorce. We are all too often not able to reach them.
Worse yet, many people are reluctant to use professional counseling as a resource to solving their problems. The obvious reasons are cost, fear of confrontation, personal disclosure, and the perceived judgment of others. Besides, not all problems require professional intervention.
I have personally experienced the power of your program and can attest to its effectiveness in giving people the tools to resolve personal issues through education and support. I also know that your empowerment process is innovative and an effective tool for building and rebuilding families. …”

“…I personally supervised the testing and validation of the personal learning process parenthesis the heart of serenity sees program) when I was the director of the San Diego Health Care for the Homeless Project (SDHC HP). In 1994 HCHP contracted with Mr. Jorgensen to provide his unique program and services to homeless individuals. The test results verified that the results were both incredible and positive period there was a pronounced and statistically significant upward shift in self esteem and personal awareness which enabled these homeless men to begin to seek find and hold employment and to stay sober.
…as a past program director in the field of chemical dependency for Vista Hill Foundation and the US Navy, I wholly wholeheartedly endorsed Serenity Seas program [Pocket Wisdom Insights Series]…

165% Cash Inflow Boost
“…I want to take this opportunity and report to you the milestone which has just been obtained here at Casa Rafael after one year of pilot project testing and follow-on application of the A.C.T. [Awareness Communication Technology] education process. The results have been astounding. Far greater than the statistical and scientific data which we have seen. Here is the summation of the results:
- Our economic well-being has significantly improved. Our monthly cash inflow has increased by 165%. This has resulted in us becoming independent of financial funding dollars. We are well on our way to a COMPLETELY SELF FUNDED OPERATION
- Our economic improvements have also complimented new and creative ways of being self supporting in other areas. An example of this is seen in the additional accounts we have secured. In February 1994 we have three accounts. As of April 30, 1995 we now have eight accounts. This is clearly due to our account sources having a high level of confidence in our ability to provide quality employees.
- New and creative solutions have appeared in rapid and profound ways within our internal operations as well. Staffing expenditures have been reduced by 40%. This is due to the utilization of A.C.T. Leadership /Followship team building and application principles.
Through all these accomplishments, it is clear that the independent alliance with your consulting firm has given us the capacity we have been searching for. As hard as it seemed at times to hire your services, I can’t now imagine having not. Awareness communication technology has empowered us onto a course of financial independence and given our staff a unique set of tools for their own personal and professional growth and development. …”

Newspaper Article:
Vista – Amos Thompson had to smile, hustle and even try some circus-style antics to become the “Granddaddy Hawker.”
On Thursday the former homeless 26-year-old beat the Alpha Project’s record by selling 170 newspapers during his shift, earning him that distinction in the Hawker Hall of Fame.
His secret?
“You make a lot of noise; you’ve got to be very friendly with people,” said Thompson, who works at the intersection of Escondido and South Santa Fe avenues.
But his roommate, Bruce Lee, wasn’t going to let Thompson stay the reigning champion without a fight, and he broke the record the next day by selling 180 Blade-Citizens at his spot at Melrose Drive and Vista way. Now Lee, 39, shares the “Granddaddy Hawker” title.
But Thompson isn’t taking it too hard. He still proudly holds the record for the most sales in one week: 637. That’s five more than Lee sold, he pointed out.
Thompson and Lee live at Casa Rafael, a renovated motel at 993 Postal Way where the Alpha Project rehabilitates homeless men who are sober and willing to work. Their first job is to sell the Blade-Citizen at 14 busy locations in North County.
The Hawking program has come a long way from selling about 10 papers a day when the program started in January 1993, said Chris Megison, regional director for the Alpha Project, a nonprofit agency based in San Diego.
At the time, five or six guys sold about 200 papers a week, Megison said. Last week the men sold 5,275 newspapers. Megison attributes much of the success to a new motivational class at Casa Rafael called Personal Awareness [AwareComm’s® Pocket Wisdom Insights™]. Since the agency started the class, the dropout rate after six months at Casa Rafael has decreased by 50 percent, he said.
One of the biggest problems among the homeless is low self-esteem, and Personal Awareness [AwareComm’s® Pocket Wisdom Insights™] teaches students that they’re somebody, Megison said. The class workbook says to take control and respond to life rather than to react to it. Thompson, who ended up living in his car because of drug problem, said it’s working for him.
“When I first came here I didn’t want to get up,” he said of the early morning routine of waking at 4:30 a.m. “But after three days I changed my attitude and it became a choice.”

“You know, I was just wondering how you guys felt as a group about what we discussed yesterday, about what you guys learned about yesterday.
For me, for my first time through, that was a pretty heavy dose of reality – dealing with all the old shit. For many years I buried that stuff, and I thought it was buried till I met my good friend Richard here… and I guess he’s a grave digger or something cause he did unbury it, man. Even though I didn’t want it, even though I had forgotten and I dealt with it in the past man, it came up and it’s still coming up. But today, through this, I’m able to digest it and let go of it.
For me to deal with things that happened to me and letting go of it – it’s a big step for me, man. Because I’m one of them hardheaded dudes, man. I don’t let go unless I get my revenge. And even then, that might not be good enough. Cause if someone hurts me I wanna hurt ‘em double. And I lived through that lifestyle for so many years that it just became second nature for me, man. Someone beats me for a dollar, I’m gonna turn around and beat them for five. That’s just the way it was. But dealing with that old past and learning this new work that I didn’t think would ever apply to me.
This word forgiveness – that was pretty heavy for me, man. Cause I had a lot of shit going in my mind. And I’ve done a lot of shit in my life. And it makes me check myself on the stuff that I did to other people, man. Hoping that there’s a way they’ll be able to forgive me for all the hurt that I did to them.
Because I was out there running amuck with drugs, women, alcohol, whatever your drug of choice may be, man. You know you’re not spreading happiness that’s for sure. People used to see me, and they used to lock the doors and close the windows then hide their purse and say ‘hey don’t answer the door’. I used to hear the little kids running around inside, man. I knew someone was in there, but they wouldn’t answer the door for me. And that’s because I was scandalous.
But hopefully with time and me continuing this lifestyle that I’m living today, man, I can make amends to all those people. Just by walking the walk that I’m walking right now. And making an example. Because that’s why I’m here today. I’m here to show you guys that yeah, this thing works if you want it to work for you. And it won’t if you won’t want it to. This is a program of choices right now.”

Rod’s Path: From Recovery to a Glowing Life
A Letter at the 15 Year Mark
And Still Owned and Referenced His Original Workbook
Fifteen years ago, I enrolled myself in a Homeless Rehabilitation Center
The program in 30 days changed my life.
How I acted.
How I felt and thought.
My attitude about life.
Finally, how I saw myself as “part of the world” and could relate to the world.
When I learned what was “the root”, I changed.
That change has stuck with me for 15 years. Using the Personal Awareness Program (Pocket Wisdom) Principles:
- I have my family back in my life
- Full Time Employment
- Co-Founded Homeless Outreach Non-Profit Organization
- Started TBS (Take Back the Streets) in San Diego (wholly funded by the Downtown Partnership)
- I could go on and on.
I wouldn’t have been alive to experience any of the above, let alone do anything about it. What a blessing.”

Wolfman’s Path to Recovery:
Outruns Homeless History
Steve Gilbertson, known as “Wolfman,” is a Vista High School graduate who was considered “hard-core” and “chronically homeless.” He survived by asking for money to buy wine, digging through trash for food, washing in public bathrooms, and sleeping in doorways, abandoned buildings, or bushes. His life revolved around the next bottle of wine, and he spent many nights in jail for public intoxication.
Gilbertson joined Casa Raphael’s homeless recovery program, which offered work opportunities and pay. He now has more self-esteem than ever, although the journey remains challenging. His story demonstrates that no case is hopeless, as emphasized by Megison.
“I wanted to give up my whole lifestyle and try to get some positive things going in my life other than drugs and alcohol… People can change. I’ve wanted to change really bad,” Gilbertson said.

Addiction Loses Its Grip: A New Lease on Life
A Letter at the 4 Year Mark
“…This is just a note to update you on Daniel’s progress since his participation in your program four years ago. From where he started, addicted to crystal and suicidal, each day is a new beginning for our family. He has worked for the same company now for two and a half years, they know, as we do, that he is a wonderful person and a good worker. His relationship with his child is warm and loving. It is the focus of his life, after his sobriety. His relationship with his ex-wife is always in the best interests of the child. He continues his participation in Narcotics Anonymous on a regular basis and enjoys their family-based activities. As you recall, I was hesitant about him attending N.A. in the beginning. I now believe that many of the friendships he has formed with “long termers” in the group may last a lifetime. He has also returned to college in the evening and is getting excellent grades in all his classes.
As for the inner person, his relationship to himself and others, he now has direction in his life. Concepts gained from your program are working in his life today. He takes responsibility for the past, puts it in its place, and recognizes his own personal path in life. He knows himself and does not require validation to proceed. He has learned to allow himself and others to be who they are. This is particularly apparent with his family and his child. While recognizing his own needs, and communicating them to us, he now hears and acknowledges the needs of others. With his child, he can say no to unacceptable behavior and still let him know he is loved, appreciated and respected. …
…P.S I know you’ll understand when I laughingly say that the main reason we recognize this change is the remaining four of us have also benefited from our participation in your program! …”

A Recovering Alcoholic Was Struggling Recovery
“…I have gone through my first Christmas, New Year’s Eve, frightening economic vulnerability often to the point of destitution, desperation over the emotional and physical abuse that my daughter experiences in her home environment and other traumatic events like the imminent possibility of losing the family property; all this without drinking or even feeling much pressure from within to do so. Your program did this for me. The “HURT” and its pain is not with me any more.
…My self-value is not any longer shackled to the mistaken belief program I was trained to function in.
…With this understanding of how a Fear Based Society works, it can no longer make me feel guilty for that which I do not have responsibility and authority over.
…I am going to review my Awareness Program work-books and then soon begin the AA process more in depth.
I have to tell you that I am surprised how well the Awareness Program alone has provided me with peace.
…if I had done the AA program alone, including the farm retreat, I would have killed myself by now. The pain would have still been there, and I would have had to hit my bottom. My anguish from the feeling of failure after doing the AA process alone and still feeling the pain would have driven me to suicide. If nothing else your program provides the best staging, the most positive footing into a successful AA 12-step program. I hope that people at AA central are not afraid to take a hard look at, and use what you have. There are so many people who don’t make it in AA, so many kids and others for which AA isn’t an attractive place to start. They just don’t get it, or get it in time. The pain is too great. They shouldn’t have to wait out the process that AA effects to get relief. They can’t wait. They shouldn’t have to hit bottom. With your program there is no need for it. …
With all my love and thanks to you, Thank God for your special computer programmer type mind.
